It is clear that WiMAX is giving up its position to LTE / LTE Advanced. There are multiple indications of that. Motorola is moving at the speed of light with LTE as far as launching new products and Verizon is doing everything it can to start deployment by Dec 31, 2009. These are just two examples ... and there are numerous ones out there.

Yes this seems to be true. Still are there not far more real working deployment of WiMax in the USA?

Clearwire is surely covering the USA states with WiMAX. These are true and real deployments. It is now time for WiMAX 2 they say when 802.16m is approved by IEEE during Summer of 2010. But any way you look at it, the clash of opinions still does and will exist because of the bottom line. And the bottom line is what technology is considered a true 4G? WiMAX or LTE or LTE-Advanced or WiMAX2? ITU will make its final decision based on specifications and actual performance. I tend to think both types are capable of getting qualified, it just depends which one will have a bigger market and acceptance by end users like you and me.

Now, if you read the article above, you'll think that LTE is not living up to initial expectations. However, read between the lines. You're talking consistent 12Mb/s download and 5Mb/s upload. Compare that to Clearwire and Sprint's consistent 7Mb/s down and 3Mb/s up and you can see right away that LTE is faster out of the box. And they're still fine tuning LTE.

That was an extract from this blog i ran into on the Sprint website : http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/147512

So, LTE is winning big time!

LTE and WiMAX Deployments Go Head-to-Head As the 4G Technology Battle Begins

This article was posted on March 2, 2010. I think there are some convincing numbers there by ABI Research:

- 164 mobile WiMAX networks in trial or commercial operation at the end of 2009, compared to just over 100 LTE trials.

[not bad for LTE i'd say] only 64 is the difference but WiMAX has been around for about half a decade (?) and LTE is just a new kid on the block.]

- The total number of network contract announcements for mobile WiMAX tracked by ABI research was 242, compared to only 38 for LTE. With the planned launch of several WiMAX devices in 2010, including handsets from smartphone maker HTC, it looks likely that this technology will co-exist with LTE for some time to come.

[well, here it is a given that WiMAX beats the hell out of LTE but again, what are we comparing? These two sister technologies - we can compare all we want but it is a matter of personal preference - one may choose WiMAX and another LTE. Of course, give LTE a little more time, let's say 2-3 years, and LTE will be a preferred one. Just my thoughts!]
